Our City Attorney is John D. Staran.  Mr. Staran is with the Firm Hafeli, Staran & Christ P.C.  Mr. Staran concentrates his law practice on advising and representing local government agencies.  He is past-chairperson of the Oakland County Bar Association’s Municipal Law Committee, and has written and lectured at numerous seminars and conferences on zoning and land use, land division, historic preservation, sign regulation, ordinance enforcement, property taxation and other municipal topics.  He has represented local government clients in District and Circuit Courts, Michigan Court of Appeals, Michigan Supreme Court, U.S. District Court, U.S. Court of Appeals, Michigan Tax Tribunal, State Tax Commission, State Historic Preservation Review Board and other administrative agencies.  He is a member of the Public Corporation and Real Property Law Sections of the State Bar of Michigan, and the Municipal Law Committee of the Oakland County Bar Association.

Mr. Staran graduated from the University of Michigan-Dearborn with distinction and received his Juris Doctor law degree from the University of Notre Dame.  He is ratee A.V. “highest rating” by the Martindale-Hubble Law Directory, and is selected to Michigan Super Lawyers, and honor awarded to only five percent of Michigan lawyers.

Away from the office, John is married with two children, has been deeply involved in coaching and directing youth sports programs, and enjoys bicycling and ice hockey.
